The Delaware river is an 14,119 miles long. Basically, that is a lot of room for a lot of fishing. The river can be see along the drive on I-95 to Center City. It also runs throughout different portions of Philadelphia. It is most noteworthy for being the river that runs along Penns-Landing. There are over 45 different species of fish that can be found in the river. Noteworthy fish that can be caught by anyone from this river are channel catfish, striped bass, white perch, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and northern snake-head. These fish listed are the one's a person would most likely catch if they were to go fishing off the pier on the Delaware River. Below is a short photo gallery of some of the fish that can be caught in the Delaware River.
The Delaware river is known mostly for its striper population. Every year striped bass come up from the ocean to the river to spawn. Therefore, many anglers go out for them when they run. They can be caught all around the Deleware River specifically at the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge, The Philadelphia Airport, and off pier located around the city. These striped bass can reach up to lengths of 10 inches to 50 + inches and weights of 1 lb to 50 + lbs. The record for the biggest striped bass in this river was caught back in 2012. Many fisherman consider this there only time of year they go fishing. The run specifically happens in April and this type of fishing is considered a "religion". Below is a video to show you why "Striper-fishing" is not only a thrill but a passion. You can in this video why this type of fishing is considered to be the "best" kind of fishing on the river.
Striped bass fishing and all the other fishes listed can be fun but there is also another form of fish that can be fun but deadly. This is the really big fish that was listed in the photo gallery which is the Northern Snakehead. This is an invasive fish species which means that this fish is not native. It was thrown into the river awhile ago and started to breed which has then established a lasting population. Today, the Fish and Game demands that anglers kill these fish because they eat the native fish species. This fish can be caught in two different places in Philadelphia. The one is the river itself and the other is Franklin Delano Roosevelt park in South Philadelphia. These fish eat anything fish wise such as minnows, worms, frogs, etc. These fish can get big too up to weights of 10 + pounds. Plus, they have a nasty mouth. More information about this fish and its origin can be found on my friends blog at "extremephillyfishing.com ". Below is a photo gallery of this scary-looking fish.
A third popular fish species is the largemouth bass. This is a fish species that rangers from 1 to 10+ lbs. They can be caught on worms, plastic worms, lures, etc. This fish is so popular among anglers in Philadelphia that a a giant fishing tournament known as the "Bass Master Elite" was held on the river. It was a four day event held back in the summer of 2014. Many local anglers from Philadelphia went to the weigh-in held at Penns-Landing. A $100,000 prize was on the line for the winner of the tournament. This tournament was not only for the money but for fishing as a culture. Groups of fisherman would come together to see the fish caught and the pro's. This helped grow the sport of fishing in Philadelphia. Below is a photo gallery of the fish species and a video of one of the pro's fishing on the river during the tournament.
